Internet Archive

Seeing the blog about Hulu, I was reminded about the huge website The Internet Archive, which has a sci-fi/horror collection - films which are now presumably in the public domain. So, how did "Night of the Living Dead", "City of the Dead/Horror Hotel", "Dementia 13", "Carnival of Souls" become public domain? A while ago, I wondered why I would see various bargain bucket DVD collections including such same titles, along with others like "Horror Express" and "The Last Man on Earth", which this website has. They also have recently added "Daughters of Darkness" and "I, Monster". There's over 200 movies in all.
