Please to meet you...don't forget my name!

So Charlie did it...so I guess I should as well. I'm company member Aly Greaves. I handle the costumes, makeup, and the podcasts. When not making monster puppets or coming up with 2000 costumes for our fearless leader's next play, I do a podcast about Joss Whedon and Buffy called Undead America. I also write a blog about my many hobbies called Alyrenee's Copious Spare Time. I also customize action figures, draw comics, write audio dramas, contribute to podcasts like Starkville's House of El and the Scapecast, and knit with a vengeance. I'm a big comic geek, game player, and horror nerd. Nice to meet you.

Allow Me To Introduce Myself

Hello BLOOD RADIO readers. We are removing the veil and the daemons of WildClaw are coming into the light. Many of us contribute to this blog, but from this point you will be able to see who is actually blogging the horror.

Etherheat™ photo by Jim Fuhr

I'm Charlie Athanas. I am the graphic artist, Marketing Director, and sometime interviewer for WildClaw Theatre. You can see my work outside of WildClaw at Burning City, Inc. and The Devil's Candy Store. Not all of us will be foolish enough to expose our identities to the horde of zombies that you are, but I've never been known for wise choices.

Enjoy BLOOD RADIO!

Zombie Walk Chicago June 21st, 2008

There will be a Zombie Walk in Downtown Chicago. Everyone should come. Wildclaw will definitely be there.

Also at the Flashback Weekend in the following week in June, there will be a Zombie Pinup Beauty Pageant that sounds tempting as well as a costume contest. Weeee! And don't forget to look for Wildclaw's own Dr. AC and the rest of the Wildclaw company at the event and at Wizard World Chicago!

Aly brings you a little old school Horror Fun!

I am doing the costumes for Collaboraction's Sketchbook '08, a short-play festival opening May 15th at the Steppenwolf Garage and running to June 16th. Here is a fun production still from a video shoot we did on wednesday night for the play Count Orlok's Castle in which two horror movie genres collide with interesting results. These are two characters from a black and white "Nosferatu" style film. I did the costumes and the makeup. Enjoy a little old school horror fun and come out to see the show!

Vampire flick, Let The Right One In, won the prize for best narrative at Robert De Niro's Tribeca Film Festival in New York last night. A Swedish film by Tomas Alfredson, Let The Right One In, has a great international trailer even without subtitles for us monolingual louts.

Deathdream and great zombie performances

Last night I watched Bob Clark’s 1974 film “Deathdream” aka “Dead of Night” (and others) for the first time in many years. I was struck by the chilling and yet moving performance by Richard Backus as Andy, the living dead son coming home from Vietnam, and struggling to cope with, well, being dead. What a gem this film is – no doubt to remade badly in the near future. It’s also one of Tom Savini’s first films as a make up artist. It made me wonder about other great “zombie” performances I have seen. And not just in major roles, but what about the non-speaking zombies that, no matter how small a part they played, are unforgettable? Here’s a few that I have great fondness for, large and small. (And yes, I’ve had to look some of the names up too) To name a few, but does anyone else have any particular favourites?

Jim Crut in Dawn of the Dead (1978) as the zombie who has the top of his head lopped off by the helicopter blades. He looked like ODDBOD from “Carry on Screaming”

Mindy Clarke as Julie in “Return of the Living Dead Part 3”

Telly Savalas as the Cossack captain in “Horror Express”

S. William Hinzman as the zombie in the graveyard at the beginning of “Night of the Living Dead” (1968)

Elizabeth Moody as Mum in “Braindead” (1992)

Howard Sherman as Bub in “Day of the Dead” (1985)

And…..

Ermes Blasarin as the bloated woman who briefly becomes a zombie in the remake of “Dawn of the Dead” (2004)

And I definitely recommend seeing “Deathdream” if you haven’t before.
