HheeEELLPPP MMEEEEE!!!
I'm one of Wildclaw's newest members, and there's still a lot for me to learn about horror. Case in point: I know who Fay Wray is because of my life-long love of -ahem- Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Next week I'm going to start a little self-education. And I need your help! What are the Five Essential Horror Films you think I need to watch asap?

Here are some of my favorites:
Evil Dead (I & II)
The Exorcist
Hellraiser
Phantasm
The Shining
Halloween
Rosemary's Baby
The Grudge
The Sentinel
The Omen
Jacob's Ladder
The Thing
OK that's way more than you asked for but I couldn't stop myself.
WOW...you'll get a lot of differing opinions on this and suggestions !!
Either Dr. AC or Kitley's Crypt will start you in the right direction but here's 5 good ones from different eras to give a feel for progression:
1. Frankenstein (the 1931 classic original with Karloff)
2. Horror of Dracula (1958, Christopher Lee in Hammer version)
3. The Exorcist (1973 and still scares the bejeuses out of me)
4. Halloween (1978)
5. The Ring (2002)
Some others: Dracula (1931), The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), The Haunting (1963), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Alien (1979), The Thing (1982)
first off, Aaron might be best to answer this one... heh!
my choices are:
1) Night of the Living Dead (1968)
2) Friday the 13th (1980)
3) Halloween (1978)
4) Phantasm (1979)
5) House of Wax (2005 - yes the one with Paris Hilton in it... i know i'll get some shit for posting this one, but it actually renewed my hope in hollywood during the onslaught of remakes and sequels)
there are plenty others, but these get my vote
ooh, can't believe i spaced on Exorcist, Omen, Rosemary's Baby and The Thing!!!
A movie that gets a lot of praise these days is The Descent. Modern women in a classic horror predicament without all that, "Don't worry ladies. The men are here to save you." stuff.
