Catch a Creepy Flick This Weekend!

Looking for a dark, brooding noir to block all this sunshine from your eyes?  Look no further this weekend than the Music Box, where Orson Welles' THE STRANGER is screening Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24.  In Welles' 1964 tense noir, he casts himself as an incognito war criminal, dodging the vigilant eye of Nazi hunter Mr. Wilson, played by Edward G. Robinson.

If you're looking for an all-day movie experience, head to the Portage Theater on Saturday for the Universal Monster Party.  Doors open at 11:30am for a noon screening of ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, followed by FRANKENSTEIN, THE WOLF MAN, DRACULA, JAWS, and DEMON KNIGHT.  All monsters, all day!  You cannot have more fun for $10.

And running at the Siskel March 29-April 4, catch a double-bill of Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO and Sacha Gervasi's 2012 film HITCHCOCK.  Get a discount when you purchase tickets for both.

MANIAC at the Music Box (w/ director William Lustig in person)

There will be a special treat for Chicago horror fans this coming weekend. The Music Box Theatre will be screening a new 35mm print of MANIAC both Friday and Saturday at midnight! Even better, director William Lustig will be there in person BOTH nights!

Renowned character actor Joe Spinell (Rocky, Nighthawks) creates one of the most memorable (and certainly the sweatiest) psychopaths ever to grace the grindhouses. Constantly moaning, mumbling and crying, Spinell’s Frank Zito conducts a reign of terror on the NYC streets, murdering young women and tacking their bloody scalps onto his ever-growing collection of female mannequins. Working from a script by Spinell and C.A. Rosenberg and aided enormously by Tom Savini’s gut-churning and (literally) mind-blowing f/x, William Lustig directs this notorious bit of nastiness with the grime and degradation piled on an inch thick throughout.



This film earned quite a nasty reputation back in its heyday. Manic hoopla from angry mothers and stuffy folks alike. Very gritty and dark, but a classic in its own right. Come join us this weekend into the dirty bowels of NYC, where being a gorgeous woman is a bad thing to be - "I warned you not to go out tonight!"

It's time again for the annual Music Box Massacre that takes place at the famous Music Box Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. The Music Box Massacre was created by Movieside head honcho Rusty Nails in 2005, and has continued to grow every year.

Advance tickets are $28.00, and as the event often sells out, buying them ahead is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Tickets can be purchased through Brown Paper Tickets or at various locations throughout the Chicagoland area, including:

Having not yet seen indie horror contender Ti West’s other flicks (The Roost, Triggerman), I cannot vouch for the buzz on the street that his latest effort represents a quantum leap in quality and skill. I can, however, attest that both of these qualities are present in spades throughout the entirety of this ’80s-infused tale of babysitters and Satanists.

Fresh-faced Jocelin Donahue stars as a cash-strapped college student who accepts a gig watching creepy couple Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov’s elderly mother while they are out for the evening, against the protests of bubbly gal pal Greta Gerwig. While the subject matter and isolated setting don’t set any records for originality, West’s slow-burn build of tension and dread-filled atmosphere is quite impressive, as is his ear for dialogue.

Veterans Noonan and Woronov sink their teeth into their juiciest genre roles in years, while newcomers Donahue and Gerwig make for a delightful pair of innocents. One of the better fright films of 2009.
