Happy 3.14

It's not even remotely horror-related (unless you count this guy's psychotic santa claus vibe), but life ain't always about horror.

Sometimes it's about pie. And math-nerd humor.

Hey, you can make the argument that Black Swan is a horror movie. And Aronofsky started his truly unsettling (ass to ass!) oeuvre with this sweet study of bat-shit paranoia:

So hey, look at me. Circled back around and made this post relevant. Boo ya.

Spooky stuff and the Oscars

So rarely do the Oscars acknowledge horror films...but horror in the guise of 'art film' often slips by those stuffy academy geezers.  This year's nominees are once again slim pickings for the bloodthirsty among us.  Here is a tiny crib sheet for oscar gore and/or spooky boots.

Leading Role Dude- James Franco in “127 Hours” (the dude cuts off his own arm...give him some props)
Leading Role Lady- Natalie Portman in “Black Swan” (she sprouts feathers...freaky body horror)
Cinematography- “Black Swan” Matthew Libatique
Directing-“Black Swan” Darren Aronofsky

Film Editing- “Black Swan” Andrew Weisblum
Makeup- “The Wolfman” Rick Baker and Dave Elsey
****Personally...it's a friggin travesty that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows did not get nominated...
Music Score- “The Social Network” Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (because trent is a spooky dude)
Best Picture- Black Swan & 127 hours both got noms

Other horror-esque nominees in year's past....
Dr. Jekkyl and Mr. Hyde
Phantom of the Opera
Picture of Dorian Gray
Rosemary's Baby
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (scariest film on this list)
Psycho
Exorcist
Omen
The Fly
American Werewolf in London
Jaws
Alien
Aliens
Beetlejuice
Silence of the Lambs
Misery
Amityville Horror
Poltergeist
Ghostbusters
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Death Becomes Her
Sweeney Todd
Sleepy Hollow

Dr. AC's 2010 Horror Film Wrap-up

Howdy troops,

After much deliberation, here is my assessment of the horror year that was. All of the films listed below were encountered by the Doc for the first time from January 1 to December 31, 2010 (i.e. no repeat viewings were eligible). To accommodate and acknowledge as many films as possible, I've broken them down into various categories in alphabetical order, with my top pick denoted with an asterisk. If I didn't see it personally, I didn't weigh in on it. (My Soul to Take, you're off the hook...this year.)

(Disclaimer: These are my personal picks and should in no way reflect on the WildClaw team as a whole. After all, I understand some people out there genuninely liked Survival of the Dead.)

As always, feel free to wiegh in with any comments, quibbles, contrasting opinions, overlooked items, 20 ton weights...we'll tag you back.

See you for more freaky fun & gory games in 2011!
