Ladies to Know...Horror Fiction and Black History Month

(Kick Ass Vampire Huntress Painting by Kick Ass Dave Dorman!)

Okay, so being a lady...and a decidedly pasty one...not only am I often reminded that horror is basically dominated by the menfolk...but the pasty white menfolk at that. So as Black History Month nears it close, I just wanted to give a shout out to the several FABULOUS African American Ladies of horror out in the world that you should be reading!

Tananarive Due writes novels about Ethiopian Immortals and supernatural thrillers as well as a civil writes memoir.

L.A. Banks has vampire huntress series and the crimson moon werewolf series. She is also super awesome and nice. We have even interviewed her..go listen to it.

Chesya Burke has several published horror short stories.

There are more...and your mission is to seek these writers out and read them. Do you have someone else that you love and want to recommend to us? Please let us know. Support horror but more importantly, support horror writers and creators with lady parts. Don't make me come find you...

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - The Video

From Seth Grahame-Smith, the author of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, comes the true history of our 16th president.

Adore - the Cannibal Play

In the Garage Theatre at Steppenwolf Theatre company, XIII Pocket presents the play, Adore by Stephen Louis Grush. (Runs from February 18th through April 25th)

"Armin is a cannibal. It's a secret he's kept ever since he was a child -- to find another person that would never leave him. He never thought it would be possible, until Bernd stepped into his life. A willing victim was the only missing piece and now he has it.

Based off of the actual shocking events that made headlines, Adore challenges our simpler concepts and shows us love as an all-consuming act. Literally. Adore follows the desires, fears, and obsessions of two men willing to give themselves completely to their hidden passions however unthinkable they may seem to the rest of the world."

DAY OF THE DEAD screening this weekend at Facets!!

Facets Multimedia
1517 W. Fullerton Ave.
Chicago IL 60614

Saturday, February 20, midnight
Zombies, Humanity and George Romero's Third Zombie Classic

Patrick Ogle's reappraisal of the underappreciated undead favorite:

DAY OF THE DEAD (1985)
Directed by George Romero

"A fitting conclusion to a remarkably astute series, a landmark in the horror genre" - TimeOut London

"Beginning from a position of absolute misanthropy, Romero asks what it means to be human, and the answers are funny, horrifying, and ultimately hopeful" - Chicago Reader

In the third and final installment in George A. Romero's Dead trilogy (preceded by Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead), the walking dead have taken over the world. Only a small band of scientists and soldiers remain and have taken refuge in an underground missile silo, where a borderline mad scientist attempts to control the hordes of zombies by experimenting on them. Fueled by fear, claustrophobia and a power struggle between the soldiers and scientists, all hell breaks loose and the remaining human survivors must engage in a horrific last ditch battle for life with thousands of the walking dead. Patrick Ogle will examine this zombie great and its relationship to the wave of undead cinema that followed.

Patrick Ogle is Facets' Media Relations Coordinator, and a PR person, promoter, recording artist and writer. A humor, business and travel writer for the Miami Herald for 6 years, Ogle is a native of Florida which is positively awash in zombies. Previous Facets Night School classes taught include "Cemetery Man: The Last of the Great Italian Knock-Offs" and "Fulci's Zombie: Brains or Entrails?"

Kitley's Krypt MYSTERY PHOTO #35

Another week, another MYSTERY PHOTO!

Jon Kitley, pillar of the Chicago Horror Community and head honcho over at KITLEY'S KRYPT, wants to challenge your horror knowledge. Week in, week out, he posts a Mystery Photo - sometimes from an obscure horror title, sometimes just an unusual shot from a well-known classic. We figured our faithful Claw readers would enjoy the challenge!

Last week's photo was from Amando de Ossorio's third entry in his Blind Dead series, EL BUQUE MALDITO (1974) , also known as Horror of the Zombies, The Ghost Galleon, Ghost Ships of the Blind Dead and many other retitlings. Known for their exquisite sound design, atmospheric cinematography and unique antagonists (the returned spirits of the Knights Templar), the four films that make up the series are must-see material for fans of Spanish Horror.

Let's see how well you fare with this week's offering:

Send your guesses to: jon@kitleyskrypt.com

If you provide the correct answer, your name will be announced next week on the Kitley's Krypt website (http://www.kitleyskrypt.com), along with a new photo. Even if you don't know the answer, we welcome any sorta-kinda educated guess! So, send in your emails today and good luck!

Kitley's Krypt MYSTERY PHOTO #34

Another week, another MYSTERY PHOTO!

Jon Kitley, pillar of the Chicago Horror Community and head honcho over at KITLEY'S KRYPT, wants to challenge your horror knowledge. Week in, week out, he posts a Mystery Photo - sometimes from an obscure horror title, sometimes just an unusual shot from a well-known classic. We figured our faithful Claw readers would enjoy the challenge!

Last week's photo was from one of the lesser-known-to-the-mainstream-but-highly-revered-by-serious-genre-fans (especially those of the '80s slasher variety), Joseph Zito's THE PROWLER (1981) . With outstanding gore f/x by master of splatter Tom Savini, this is one of the finer examples of the subgenre and well worth seeking out on DVD, especially considering the commentary by Savini and Zito alone is worth the price of a rental. The two would team up again for Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, which many feel to be the apex of the franchise.

Let's see how well you fare with this week's offering:

Dance of the Demented Coming

I can't tell you how excited we are about our upcoming benefit, The Dance of the Demented,on February 20th at the Viaduct Theatre. We're holding it in the same space that will house our world premiere stage adaptation of William Peter Blatty's novel, LEGION (the sequel to The Exorcist.)

You get to see top illustrators paint, draw and sculpt live during the party from a variety of hot horror models scattered throughout the venue. So, you can drink, dance, mingle AND watch these masters create horror art right before your eyes. Feel free to bring your own sketchpads or laptops and join them!

If you're gonna drink and dance to multiple DJ's, you may as well do it surrounded by models (male and female) and amazing art. See you there!

The artists featured will be:

Tony Akins (Jack of Fables/House of Mystery)

J Anthony Kosar (Avatar/Buckaroo Bonzai)

The Cabinet by Redmoon Theatre

Way back when, Charley Sherman asked Mr. Morlock to design lights for a little skit he had in mind - Clive Barker's "In the Flesh." He suggested two films to watch for inspiration: Dario Argento's "Suspiria" and "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari."

This made for a woozy weekend's viewing.

Mr. Morlock had seen "Dr. Caligari" in a film class and a had a vague sense of its position in the firmament of stellar, influential films. It's also beautiful and creepy as all get-out. So he had little interest in seeing a mid-sixties rip-off with the same title,

and probably would have passed on this 2005 remake, had it actually shown up on his radar.

But this... this! Redmoon Theatre, doing a puppet show version? Oh my heavens, yes.

Saw it last week, just before opening. Gorgeous. Exhilaratingly inventive stage tricks. And yes, creepy as all get-out.

I have to admit, Mr. Morlock has once had to fight back a sneer at the notion of puppets for grown-ups, remembering the earnest, greasy-haired dork played by John Cusack in "Being John Malkovich." But if you go back and look at those marionette sequences -- rather compelling. And Redmoon...

Redmoon works on a whole different level, people. Their mission statement actually says some nonsense about engaging your childlike sense of wonder, giving you the experience of a waking dream. Sounds like drivel, BUT IT'S TRUE. Their shows are other-worldly. You truly do feel transported. And the waking dream of "The Cabinet" is pleasantly shivery and nightmarish.

You will enjoy. Go and see.

Kitley's Krypt MYSTERY PHOTO #33

Another week, another MYSTERY PHOTO!

Jon Kitley, pillar of the Chicago Horror Community and head honcho over at KITLEY'S KRYPT, wants to challenge your horror knowledge. Week in, week out, he posts a Mystery Photo - sometimes from an obscure horror title, sometimes just an unusual shot from a well-known classic. We figured our faithful Claw readers would enjoy the challenge!

Last week's photo was from Tod Browning's 1936 classic, THE DEVIL-DOLL. Lionel Barrymore stars as an escaped (wrongfully accused) convict who hatches a scheme of vengeance upon the three corporate crooks that framed him. Not an unusual plot device, but how many films involve dressing the main character in old lady drag, shrinking people down to doll size then sending them out to commit murder? Exactly. Additionally, the special effects are quite impressive for their day and still hold up. Well worth checking out.

Let's see how well you fare with this week's offering:

Who Needs a Spider Car When You've Got WildClaw?

I'm very happy to live in a world where someone thought this was a good idea.

Even my entomophobic streak can appreciate it. But it's not as cool as our upcoming benefit.

Speaking of, have you gotten your tix for Dance of the Demented yet? We won't have a spider car. We'll have so much more than that. Artists. Burlesque. Special Guests. Exorcisms-while-you-wait. We guarantee a deliciously macabre good time.

And it all benefits LEGION. Turns my grey heart red.

PLEASE NOMINATE THE REVENANTS FOR AN ORGIE!

Dear Chicago theatre folks, if you’ve received an appeal for Orgie Award nominations, please consider nominating THE REVENANTS for overall production or any individual aspect:

Production - WildClaw Theatre
Directing - Anne Adams
Playwriting - Scott T. Barsotti
Acting - Brian Amidei, Ryan Patrick Dolan, Laura Hooper, Jenny Strubin
Set Design - Charlie Athanas
Lighting Design - Paul Foster
Costume Design - Aly Renee Greaves
Sound Design/Original Music - Mikhail Fiksel
Makeup Design - Sania Panayotova
Fight Choreography - Aaron Christensen
Blood Effects/Squibs - Ryan Oliver

WildClaw is a truly original company and thus, should win an Orgie!

***
PARTICIPATE IN OUR ORGIES This is year FIVE of awarding Orgies to original, daring, and sometimes over-looked theatre artists of the Chicago theatre community. Members of the Orgie Theatre Committee have fought, screamed, and passive-aggressively manipulated each other in order to decide the annual winners. Since we admire the unpredictable, this year we've decided to mix it up. The Orgie Theatre Committee is asking YOU to nominate the winners. What Chicago theatre artist(s) inspired you in 2009 with their innovation and fearlessness? The Orgie Committee will consider every nomination submitted, and select the final winners. To submit a nomination for theatre work produced between January - December 2009, please include for each nomination: - Name of artist(s) being nominated. Actors, directors, designers, producers, playwrights, ensembles, stage managers, ushers, or any other categories in theatre that you wish are eligible - Name of the show on which the artist worked - Theatre company which produced the show - And, in 25 words or less (more if you absolutely HAVE TO), tell us why this person/group inspired you. Why does this artist deserve an Orgie, as opposed to some other less exciting theatre award? What was unusual, unexpected, profound, edgy, and/or original about the artist's work? You may nominate yourself if you are so boldly and shamelessly inclined, but you must still follow the guidelines. No more than 3 nominations per person may be submitted Please email all nominations by February 20, 2010 to: orgietheatreaward@yahoo.com

THE ORGIE EFFECT
Over the last five years, the press reaction to the Orgies has tickled us. Christopher Piatt, former theatre editor of Time-Out managed to write kick-ass witty pieces about the Orgie winners every year. Hedy Weiss kindly tried to list the winners in her paper, but could not overcome her ethical reservations about our anonymity. Performink's Jonathan Abarbanel begged, teased, battled, insulted, and threatened us in an effort to get us to expose our identities. We refused, and the Orgie winners have never been published in Chicago's Performink. Meanwhile, American Theatre Magazine has faithfully announced the Orgie Theatre Award winners annually without complaint. The Orgie Theatre Awards announcement is emailed to thousands of Chicago theatre artists. The responses from the Chicago theatre community have been AMAZING, and moved some of our hardest-hearted members to tears. Thank you for your support. . Send us your nominations!! Mwah!! Questions/innuendos/bitter critiques/lavish praise: orgietheatreaward@yahoo.com

ABOUT THE ORGIES The "Orgie" is an award to encourage original, innovative, risky, thrilling, inspiring, and possibly outlandish work in Chicago theatre. All theatre disciplines are eligible to receive an Orgie Theatre Award -- directing, acting, playwriting, music composition, ensemble work, lighting, sound, props, set design, artistic direction, producing, et al.
Winners of the Orgie Theatre Award will each receive a sealed award certificate and one hundred dollars. The Orgie Theatre Award committee is an anonymous collection of theatre artists and patrons. The name "Orgie" is taken from the word "original." To be granted an Orgie, a nominee must receive a majority of the committee's votes. The Orgie Theatre Award committee does not claim to be fair, unbiased, or reasonable. Our goal is to encourage a spirit of originality and adventure in Chicago theatre.

Last week's photo was from the 1971 flick, BEAST OF THE YELLOW NIGHT, one of a series of films shot in the Philippines by low budget director Eddie Romero. True, the "other Romero" doesn't get a fraction of the ink of our good old Uncle George, but Eddie's films are always enormously entertaining and well worth checking out. Other horror efforts include the "Blood Island" trilogy, (Brides of Blood, Mad Doctor of Blood Island and Beast of Blood), as well as The Twilight People (featuring an early performance from blaxploitation queen Pam Grier). Under all that makeup is Romero's go-to leading man, John Ashley, who served as producer for several of Romero's films, and is probably better known as the producer of TV's The A-Team.

Let's see how well you fare with this week's offering:

Does horror really work on stage?

The Guardian says: "Ghost Stories, which opens at the Liverpool Playhouse on 4 February before moving to the Lyric Hammersmith, claims to be the scariest theatrical experience ever conceived. So scary, in fact, that they are warning people not to go and see it. The publicity advises that the show "contains moments of extreme shock and tension" and that "pregnant women or anyone of a nervous disposition should think seriously before attending".
